Academics

What is the academic calendar for the fall?
Monday, August 30: First day of classes

How will classes be taught in the fall?
Classes will be in-person. We will use Zoom as needed if a faculty member feels ill or needs to care for someone or is in quarantine or isolation from COVID-related exposure or symptoms. Faculty and staff with verified medical reasons that affect them or a family member needing care may request an accommodation to work remotely through Human Resources. Students are encouraged to work with their academic advisors, faculty members, and Dean of Students if they are ill or otherwise not able to attend class.

Has new classroom technology been added?
All indoor classrooms have been further outfitted with Zoom upgrades including enhanced Audio Technology (in-room speakers and microphone systems), enhanced Video Technology including Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) Auto Tracking Cameras, and large dual displays mounted at the rear of the room or in the well toward the front of the room. All other classroom technology (e.g., computer systems) and equipment (e.g., whiteboards) remain unchanged.

Can students still take classes at the other 5Cs?
Cross-campus registration will continue per usual; however, each campus will decide for itself as to whether classes will be in-person or hybrid or fully online. We anticipate most if not all courses offered at the Claremont Colleges to be in-person.

Will shared academic spaces be open?
Shared academic spaces will be open for use (Crocker Reading Room, the computer labs, the Cube, the library, etc.) Some occupancy limits are possible.

Will study abroad programs, the Silicon Valley Program and the Washington Program still be options in the fall?
Yes. There are no plans to cancel study abroad, the Silicon Valley Program (SVP) or the Washington, DC Program. The deadlines for some of these programs were extended through the end of July, but are now closed. If you are approved to participate in these programs, CMC will contact you regarding any specific information related to your program.

When will new students register for classes?
New students will meet with their academic advisors the week of August 9 and will register for classes on August 17-18 at a time that will be assigned to them by the Office of the Registrar. New students should check their New Student Portal regularly for updates.

What is the due date for fall thesis?
The CMC thesis due date is December 6, 2021.

What will the grading policy be for fall 2021?
The grading policy can be found in the CMC Course Catalog. Please note that starting fall 2021, all of the Claremont Colleges will be on a 4.0 grade point system. Previously, CMC had been on a 12.0 grade point system.

Will office hours be offered online or in-person?
Office hours will be arranged by each faculty member, and may be in-person or online. Outdoor office hours are encouraged.

Will the Athenaeum be open for in-person events?
The Athenaeum will resume in-person events beginning September 13. Until further notice, the receptions will be held on the patio at 5:30 p.m. and dinner registration will be limited to CMC students, faculty, and staff.

What will Physical Education classes look like?
CMS has a full slate of PE Courses planned for the fall. Many in-person courses on campus will be taught outdoors to mitigate risk and will meet all state and county guidelines. There will be a few asynchronous offerings for those not ready to return to in-person PE. Please reach out to the instructor or Associate Athletic Director, Randy Town, for more information.

Will there be access to outdoor classrooms/equipment?
We are currently gauging faculty demand for outdoor classrooms, including equipment needs for these spaces.  We are also working on how to fairly allocate these spaces, particularly if demand for said spaces exceeds the supply. There are two tented classrooms located on the pickleball courts with typical classroom technology but not zoom capabilities. We are investigating whether the demand is there to add two additional tents for teaching east of the “Bubble” , as well as additional shaded areas for teaching (e.g., Kravis Patios).

If a faculty member is assigned an outdoor classroom, we encourage them to let their students know ahead of time. We also urge students to talk to their professor or the office of accessibility services if meeting outside poses a health concern.

Academic Support Resources

I usually get my books from the CARE Center NextRoom Book Loan Program. Will the program resume this fall?
Yes, the book loan program will be active — more to come from the CARE Center. We encourage students to contact the Dean of Students Office if they are interested in donating their books from the end of the spring semester to help populate the loan library for fall.

Are there support resources to help me prepare for the transition back to campus?
Faculty and students alike will be adjusting to in-person classes again. The Dean of Students and Dean of Faculty Offices are prepared to help students acclimate to in-person academic life and social interactions. Visit DOS for support resources to assist with issues such as: test anxiety, time management, managing your health and well-being, finding your voice in class, building relationships with faculty, sleep strategies, etc.

Will Huntley Bookstore be open in the fall?
Huntley Bookstore will be open throughout the fall semester. Remember, Huntley receives the electronic version for most textbooks, which can be rented, often for less than the cost of the hardcopy purchase.

Will Center for Writing and Public Discourse (CWPD) consultations be available?
Absolutely! You can make an appointment using their online scheduling platform.

Will I be able to get a DOS Peer Tutor or work with a Success Coach in the fall?
Success Coaches and DOS Peer Tutors will be available for individual and small-group sessions this fall. There will likely be options to meet in-person or via Zoom. The Success Coach program will also be hosting various in-person or virtual workshop series, such as Best Life Strategies and Chill. Please visit the Academic Success webpage for updated information in the fall.

Will the Quantitative Computing Lab (QCL) consultations be available for students?
Yes, one-on-one mentoring will continue to be offered by the QCL, both in-person and via Zoom.

Will there be any workshop opportunities at the Quantitative Computing Lab (QCL) as there have been in the past?
Yes, the QCL will continue offering workshops either in-person or via Zoom. Topics will include Excel, Tableau, R, Python, MATLAB, and LaTeX. QCL may add a couple of new workshops in the fall such as SQL (database) and supercomputing.

Are there resources for students who will be coming back to campus after having faced trauma and loss due to the pandemic?
Students who have faced trauma or loss for any reason, including the pandemic, are supported by the College in a range of ways such as academic, financial, and mental health resources. Students are encouraged to reach out to the Dean of Students Office if they have specific concerns related to their transition back to campus. We ask that all students build a community of care for one another, as we will each return to campus with a set of lived experiences that should be honored and respected.

Accessibility Services

Will my accessibility (ADA) accommodations change once we return to campus?
In most cases, students with existing accommodations should expect to maintain their accommodations when they return to campus. Students should check in with Accessibilty Services in the DOS office each semester to review their accommodations with the Assistant Dean. If the accommodation was specific to the virtual environment, then it may become inactive. Further, if the student has only had accommodations in a virtual environment and has different needs on campus, they can reach out to Accessibilityservices@cmc.edu to determine what modifications may be appropriate to support equal access to the residential and academic experiences at CMC. These can include housing, dining, and other physical accommodations. Finally, many students may have received new diagnoses during their time away from campus and are encouraged to update their files so that we may best support their equal access through updated or modified accommodations.

If a student has had a previous housing accommodation, they are required to submit a renewal request and potentially updated documentation in order to reactivate their housing accommodation. Email accessibilityservices@cmc.edu with any questions.

What if I did not have accommodations during the virtual semesters?
Any students, new or returning, who have not received accommodations previously should visit our website to read more information about our request process, documentation, and to submit the accommodations request. Please feel free to send any questions to accessibilityservices@cmc.edu.

Athletics and Recreation

What will happen to CMS Athletics in the fall semester?
Varsity athletics will return in the fall. Each program will adhere strictly to NCAA, SCIAC, LA County, and CMS guidelines for health and safety. If you are a student-athlete, please reach out to your head coach for the most up to date information on return. The Athletic Department will be providing more updates on return in early summer, including information on physicals and return dates as well as required paperwork for compliance, athletic training, and the equipment room.

Will fans be allowed at CMS Athletics Events?
CMS will follow all state and county guidance regarding fans at athletic competitions as well as adhere to all SCIAC and NCAA Guidelines for a safe return. We anticipate that to mean that spectators are welcome at all events within safety protocols.

Will Roberts Pavilion be open?
Roberts Pavilion will be open for athletic and recreational use this fall within safety protocols, with masks required in all indoor facilities. The Roberts Pavilion staff implemented a new electronic management system called Fusion that will streamline access to the facility and ease program registration for all users.

Usage hours and capacity will meet LA County and California guidelines for gyms and fitness establishments.

Will I be able to take Physical Education courses?

Will CMS Recreation have programs in the fall?
CMS Recreation plans to have a variety of programming, both in-person and virtual, including classes, intramurals, and workshops. For in-person recreation, CMS will adhere to all LA County and California guidelines for gyms and fitness establishments. The goal is to continue to support the fitness and well-being needs of our students, faculty, and staff in the transition back to campus. Will 5C Club Sports be sponsored this fall?
CMS is working closely with Pomona-Pitzer to plan for a safe return for our 5C Club Sports. Please reach out to Matt Ryan, Assistant Director of Recreation, for more information.

COVID-19 Vaccinations and Testing

Will COVID-19 testing be mandatory?
All vaccinated students will be tested twice within their first two weeks on campus and once per week until public health conditions improve.

What if I  cannot come to class because I am ill or in HHB-mandated quarantine/isolation?
Students who are ill or in HHB mandated quarantine/isolation should not attend class in person, and should communicate directly about their absence with their instructors before class. If helpful, students may seek guidance from the Dean of Students Office as to how to approach that communication and work with their faculty to maintain their academic progress. If a faculty member requires verification that HHB has mandated quarantine/isolation for a student, they should contact Ellen Rentz at 
ellen.rentz@cmc.edu.

Depending on the severity of the illness, students can take part in an interactive process through the Office of Accessibility Services to determine if they qualify for reasonable, temporary accommodations that fit their needs based on medical documentation. Unreasonable accommodations include those that might fundamentally alter the academic program or lower the standards of the College, for example, a waiver of essential course requirements or prolonged absence from class. Academic advisors and the Dean of Students Office can work closely together to guide students’ decisions related to continuation in a course should successful completion of the course become untenable.

Will COVID-19 vaccinations be mandatory?
With the surge in transmission and breakthrough infections due to the Delta variant, it is an essential and non-negotiable expectation that all students abide by any rules related to health guidelines. We will lean on all students to respect and comply with the current and any emerging masking, distancing, and gathering rules related to health guidelines as we attempt to minimize the level of infection. The COVID-19 vaccine is mandatory for all students; however, as is the case with other vaccination requirements, students can submit an affidavit for exemption from vaccination for documented medical reasons, or if it conflicts with the tenets and practices of a recognized church, religious denomination or recognized religious organization of which the applicant is an adherent or member. Students who qualify for an exception will be required to be tested for COVID-19 twice weekly, free of charge. The deadline to request an exemption was July 19; however, please contact Nyree Gray, Associate VP for Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Civil Rights Officer (ngray@cmc.edu) if you would like to discuss your particular situation.

How can I provide proof of my COVID-19 vaccination?
Students are asked to upload documentation of their vaccination to the Qualtrics health-screening site. You can upload a photo of your vaccination card. You will be prompted to indicate which type of vaccine you received and the date of your shot(s). You can upload the first vaccine and then the second once you have completed the series.

Will COVID-19 vaccines be provided for students who can’t get them in their home community?
If there are CMC students in locations (domestic or international) who have not been able to access a vaccine, we will work with those students one-on-one to help them get vaccinated in their location, or, if necessary, upon arrival to Claremont. If early arrivals are required to accommodate on-site vaccination, those will be discussed on a case by case basis.

Can students receive COVID-19 vaccines that are not approved for use in the U.S.?
Students are encouraged to get whatever brand of vaccine is offered safely in their home location. Vaccines that are not approved for use in the U.S. will satisfy CMC’s vaccine mandate, but students receiving those vaccines may be subject to an antibody serology test to assess immunity. Additionally, they may be required to participate in regular COVID-19 testing (self-administered nasal swab, PCR test, free of charge) in coordination with CMC’s Hamilton Health Box clinic. Students are welcome to contact Hamilton Health Box directly at covid19@cmc.edu to discuss their specific situation.

All students will be tested twice within their first two weeks on campus, regardless of vaccine status.

Will vaccination expectations be standardized across the 5Cs?
Students at all of the Claremont Colleges are required to be vaccinated to return to campus.

Will students be tested regularly for COVID-19?
All students, regardless of vaccination status, are required to bring a negative PCR test result to campus upon arrival, beginning August 21. The test should have been performed within 72 hours of arrival. Additionally, all students will be tested twice within their first two weeks on campus. Any unvaccinated students, faculty, and staff must also complete a PCR test twice a week, and the College will closely enforce compliance. CMC will monitor COVID-19 conditions locally and on campus and will adjust the necessity and frequency of surveillance testing for our entire community as needed to respond to risks of significant community transmission.

How can I get a COVID-19 test if I don’t feel well or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19?
If you have COVID-19 symptoms or had recent exposure to a Positive COVID-19 Case, call Hamilton Health Box (HHB) at 909-607-2301 or email
covid19@cmc.edu to speak to a medical professional who will triage and schedule you for a private testing appointment.

The Diagnostic Testing Schedule is as follows:

Diagnostic testing is designed to ensure symptomatic/exposed individuals are not in line with healthy individuals during testing.

What are the safety requirements for unvaccinated faculty, staff and students on campus?
The College is requiring that all unvaccinated students and employees receive a COVID test twice a week. These individuals are required to wear a mask both indoors and outdoors, and should maintain six feet distance from others if they have removed their mask to eat or drink. The College will be monitoring compliance, and failure to meet these requirements will be subject to disciplinary action.

Is CMC able to verify the vaccination records that students, faculty, and staff submit?
Yes. Throughout the summer, HHB has worked diligently to validate COVID-19 Vaccination Records by assessing the following indicators: Cross checking with patient records within California’s Immunization Registry, International Vaccine Lot # Codes, and examining markers of authenticity for government agencies issuing the record, both within United States and internationally. This process is ongoing and can be more challenging depending on the location of vaccination. However, HHB and CMC have high confidence in its level of vaccination verification.

Masks and Face Coverings

Per Los Angeles County policy, everyone 2 years of age and older must wear a mask in all indoor public settings, venues, gatherings, and public and private businesses, regardless of vaccination status.

Masks in CMC housing
Regarding residence halls and apartments, masks are not required inside your individual residence hall room or apartment with no one other than your roommates. Those areas are considered your “household”. However, masks are required once you are with others or exit that private/semi-private space and enter into common areas in residential spaces including hallways, bathrooms, elevators, lounges. When you leave your room/apartment place a mask on when still indoors. If others enter your room, or you enter someone else’s room, you must all put on a mask.

CMC dining halls and venues
Masks are required for entry and any time you are not actually eating in all dining halls and venues. You are permitted to remove your mask indoors when you are actively eating or drinking, alone in a separate room, or within your “household” room/apartment. We prefer that you eat outside whenever possible. Please physically distance to the extent possible in the dining hall.

Classroom settings
Masks are required in all indoor classrooms.  A faculty member may require masks in outdoor classroom settings, as well; if so, this will be indicated on the syllabus. Students may not eat or drink in classrooms. If a student refuses to follow these policies, the instructor may ask them to leave the classroom and will report them to the Dean of Students Office. If a student refuses to leave the classroom, the instructor may call Campus Safety who will notify the Dean of Students Office and assist them as needed to escort the student out.

What type of face masks are acceptable?
Per the LA County Guidelines, acceptable face masks include cloth masks, surgical masks, and N-95 respirator masks. If you are using a face shield, you are still required to wear a face mask.

CMC COVID Visitor Policy

Vaccinations are the most important tool to help protect the community against the spread of COVID-19.  Accordingly, all on-campus visitors over the age of 16 must be fully vaccinated. At their discretion, CMC staff may require proof of vaccination (in advance of the visit and/or while on campus). Visitors must follow all College health and safety protocols, which will be fully explained to the visitor by the member or department of the CMC community who invited the visitor (the “Campus Host”). The Campus Host will also ensure that the visitor remains in full compliance with all relevant policies.

Beyond this vaccination requirement, visitors who (i) will be on campus overnight, (ii) plan to be on campus more than two consecutive days, (ii) arrive from an international location, or (iv) will be in prolonged or significant contact with CMC community members as determined by their Campus Host (particularly if dining on campus) must submit proof of a negative PCR test no more than 72 hours before arrival to campus.

Visitors must self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms prior to arrival and may not come to campus if symptomatic or otherwise sick. If a visitor tests positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of coming to campus, the visitor agrees to promptly notify CMC’s on-campus health clinic (909-607-2301 or covid19@cmc.edu) as well as participate in contact tracing.

CMC Vice Presidents have overall responsibility for approving visits and overseeing visitor compliance with protocols within their areas of responsibility. CMC Vice Presidents may also, in consultation with the COVID Compliance Committee, make exceptions to the vaccination requirement for visitors (such as when a short-term visitor will remain outside and masked at all times).

Currently, CMC students may not invite visitors to campus unless those visitors are coming to campus as part of a CMC or 5C recognized club or organization activity. Clubs or organizations who wish to invite visitors to campus must obtain advance approval from the CMC Student Activities Office prior to extending the invitation.

A visitor is anyone other than a current CMC/Claremont Colleges student, employee, faculty member, CMC trustee or institute/center board member, or approved CMC volunteer. Visitors who are on campus for only a few minutes at a time (such as delivery personnel) are not required to be vaccinated.

This policy may be amended from time to time to respond to changing health conditions or governmental regulations.

Financial Aid and Campus Employment

My family experienced a loss of income due to COVID-19. Can I apply for additional financial aid?
Yes, the Office of Financial Aid has an appeals process for such circumstances.

Will there be on-campus jobs this fall?
In-person CMC student-employment opportunities will be available this fall. As is normally the case, students have the opportunity to convert their work study “self-help assistance amount” to “self-help in the form of a student loan.” Students need to make a request in writing to the Office of Financial Aid in order to initiate this change.

For students seeking CMC employment, the Soll Center for Student Opportunity will post open roles as they become available. Students can also contact departments directly. Most opportunities can be accessed through Handshake, the Center’s online recruiting system. Please continue to reach out to the Soll Center for Student Opportunity and the Career Coaches for guidance and support.

Will the Research Institutes be active and hiring student employees? 
Yes, the Research Institutes will be very active and will able to have student employees. Please visit the Research Institutes and Centers gateway and reach out to the Directors for more information. The CMC Club and Research Institute Fair will happen on Friday, September 3 where you can learn more about the Research Institutes and other campus opportunities.

How can students access emergency funds?
The College has limited emergency funds for academic year costs that fall outside the cost of attendance. Students can apply for the funds here when the academic year begins.

Health Services and Insurance

Can students access general health services when they return to campus?
Student Health Services (SHS) will continue to be open this fall. Students should anticipate that medical services through SHS will be received on an appointment basis only. Same day appointment availability will be expanded to accommodate most students in a timely manner. SHS can be contacted at 909-621-8222. SHS also advises you to review their website to get more detailed information about the services provided.

Students will continue to have the option of using the contracted telemedicine service, 7C.Health. This no cost option is available to ALL students at The Claremont Colleges, regardless of whether they are living on campus, locally off campus or in a different part of the country. Please note that all telemedicine services will be provided through 7C.Health, not SHS.

Where do CMC students go for COVID-19 related health concerns?
Student Health Services (SHS) will be available to local students for basic medical needs; however, Claremont McKenna College has contracted with Hamilton Health Box, an independent, licensed health clinic which has a location on CMC’s campus, to assist CMC students with COVID-19 assessments, testing, symptom monitoring, and contact tracing. The clinic is located at 654 East Sixth Street (formerly The Children’s School), or by phone at 909-607-2301 or by email: covid19@cmc.edu.  The clinic is the gateway through which CMC can move forward through this pandemic.

Will I be required to have health insurance if I am living at home or off-campus and I am not spending any time on campus for the fall 2021 semester?
Yes. When enrolled at CMC all students, regardless of where you live, are required to have health insurance.

Enrolled domestic students who carry personal health insurance coverage may request to waive enrollment in the Claremont Colleges Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) by submitting information and proof of coverage annually via their SHIP Insurance Verification Portal. Students who do not complete the waiver process by August 30 will be enrolled in SHIP.

Enrolled international students who reside inside the U.S. will be automatically enrolled in SHIP but may apply for a waiver to show proof that they have health insurance coverage by a domestic insurer who pays claims in the US and the policy meets all the waiver requirements for coverage. International students may apply for a waiver by contacting Lyn Hughes in the Dean of Students Office at Lyn.Hughes@claremontmckenna.edu.

Enrolled international students will be automatically enrolled in SHIP but may apply for a waiver to show proof that they have comparable health coverage in their home country of residence. International students may apply for a waiver by contacting Lyn Hughes in the Dean of Students Office at Lyn.Hughes@claremontmckenna.edu.

Housing and Orientation

If I live in Alexan Kendry, will I have access to transportation to and from campus?
Yes. A shuttle service will run between Alexan Kendry and campus at regular intervals.

When is move-in and orientation?
We anticipate the following schedule:

August 12-19 – Class of 2025 Virtual Family Orientation Sessions
August 19— New International Student Move-In (Class of 2024 and 2025)
August 20-21— New International Student Orientation
August 22—Class of 2025 Student Move-In
August 23-25—Class of 2025 WOA Trips

Will the move-in dates be different for international students?
We hope that our international students who are juniors and seniors will be able to move in with other students in their class per the dates outlined above, but we will attempt to accommodate early and late arrival requests for required travel quarantine issues or for potential travel complications. International students in the classes of 2024 and 2025 will move in on Thursday, August 19 to take part in a short, international student orientation (Friday, 8/20 – Saturday 8/21) program preceding the full orientation program with the rest of their class. Please see the email from Chrystal Orozco.

Will new students have a WOA trip?
Yes, there will be WOA trips for new first-year and sophomore students, and transfer students.
 

Will the class of 2024 have an on-campus orientation or a WOA trip since they missed those experiences this past year?
Yes, sophomores will move in on August 24, and will head off on WOA on August 25-27. Upon return, they will take part in orientation activities prior to the start of classes on August 30.

Is there an Orientation program for parents and families of students?
The parents and families of new students will have the opportunity to attend a range of virtual orientation sessions in August 2021 prior to students’ arrival on campus. Students are encouraged to bring no more than two people to help them move in and get settled on their assigned move-in day as outlined below.

August 19—new international students from class of 2024, class of 2025 and transfers. We anticipate here will be an informal reception for parents and families that evening. More information to come.

August 22—first-year students move in. In addition to informal opportunities to meet members of the Parent Network Board throughout the day, CMC will host formal welcome sessions for parents and families featuring President Hiram Chodosh and key administrators. Please check the Parent and Family Orientation page for more information.

August 24—sophomore students move in. Sophomore parents and families participated in full orientation activities last fall. We look forward to meeting parents and family members in person, when they help their students move in on August 24. In addition to informal opportunities to meet members of the Parent Network Board throughout the day, CMC will host formal welcome sessions for parents and families featuring President Hiram Chodosh and key administrators. Are early arrivals going to be approved for athletic teams, student leadership groups, etc.?
Yes, Residential Life is coordinating with Athletics and other campus departments on the needs and timing for early arrivals. As is typical of our early arrival process, all early arrivals must be sponsored by a department with a specific need for students to be on campus.

Will students who live locally be allowed to visit campus?
Enrolled students living off-campus will be permitted to come to campus for classes and school sponsored activities, provided they are vaccinated and abide by all behavioral expectations, including any health screening and testing requirements.

Will students be required to wear masks?
Current LA County Face Covering Guidance
In LA County, everyone 2 years of age and older must wear a mask in all indoor public settings, venues, gatherings, and public and private businesses, regardless of vaccination status.

Indoor dining halls and venues- masks are required for entry and any time you are not actually eating.  You are permitted to remove your mask indoors when you are actively eating or drinking, alone in a separate room, or within your “household” room/apartment.

Will there be enhanced cleaning protocols to reduce COVID-19 outbreaks in the residence halls?
Yes. There are strict cleaning protocols in place to support the health of our community. This includes increased cleaning of all common spaces and shared surfaces, especially in the residence hall bathrooms and lounges. To meet the enhanced cleaning requirements in these high transmission areas, it was necessary to reallocate building attendants’ work load; therefore, students, rather than building attendants, will be responsible for cleaning their own residence hall room. Basic cleaning supplies and vacuums will be available for check out with the Resident Assistants living in each building.

Will students be allowed to have guests in their residence halls?
Students’ guests are limited to Claremont Colleges students. Outside guests including students who do not attend the Claremont Colleges, family members, friends from home, etc. are not permitted on campus per our institutional COVID-19 protocols.

What if someone needs quarantine or isolation housing?
CMC’s Covid Compliance Committee has established protocols for the isolation or quarantine of students who contract COVID-19 or are the close contact of someone who has contracted COVID-19. Temporary housing locations adjacent to campus are designated and stocked with beds, linens, shelf-ready snack items, and medical supplies. Meal delivery will be coordinated, and students will have daily medical check-ins with our Hamilton Health Box medical team. The Dean of Students office will work closely with any student in isolation or quarantine to support their ongoing mental, physical, emotional, and academic success.

CMC stored my belongings when we left in March 2020. How can I collect them when I return to campus for the fall semester?
CMC will continue to store returning students’ belongings until CMC’s residential program resumes. Please contact the Dean of Students Office or Facilities & Campus Services who can assist you in retrieving your belongings from storage.

If I stored a bike on campus, how can I retrieve it?
Bikes will not be shipped to students. All registered and stored bikes will remain in the Stark and Crown storage rooms, and students can retrieve bikes when they return to campus. Please email MaryKate Jacobs, Assistant Director of Student Activities, to coordinate pick up.

International Students

Will I be able to enter the US with my F-1 visa during the fall 2021 semester?
Students with a valid F-1 visa and Active SEVIS record may re-enter the U.S. at any time if there are no travel restrictions applied to their country of departure. Students with SEVIS records in “Initial” status are now permitted to enter the U.S. for Fall 2021 as long as they are enrolled in at least one in-person course. The earliest date for these students to enter the US is 30 days before the beginning of the semester.

Will I need to apply for a new F-1 visa to return to campus?
All students will need a valid F-1 visa and endorsed Form I-20 to enter the US. A new F-1 visa is required only if the visa will expire before entering the U.S.

Will I still be in valid F-1 status even if I am not in the U.S. during Fall 2021?
According to the ICE Fall 2020 COVID-19 Guidance, when CMC resumes in-person instruction in Fall 2021, students will be required to be present in the U.S. and enrolled full time (3 credits or more) at CMC to have valid F-1 status.

If I took general leave of absence during Fall 2020 and/or Spring 2021, will I need to apply for a new F-1 visa to return in Fall 2021?
As long as the F-1 visa currently in your passport is unexpired, you will not need to renew your F-1 visa to return to the U.S. after your leave of absence. You will likely need a new SEVIS record and Form I-20 from Chrystal Orozco. Citizens of Canada and Bermuda are not required to obtain a physical F-1 visa and would only need a new SEVIS record and Form I-20 to return to CMC.

Am I able to be enrolled part-time in Fall 2021 as a student in F-1 status?
International students must be enrolled in at least 3 credits to maintain their F-1 status. Exceptions can be made for: (1) students with medical reasons necessitating a reduced course load, and (2) students in their final semester who do not need to be enrolled in 3 credits to complete their graduation requirements. Reduced course load requests must be submitted to and authorized by Chrystal Orozco (corozco@cmc.edu).

Will international students be able to transfer courses from their home country back to CMC?
International students may be able to transfer some courses back from universities in their home country; however, all transfer opportunities must be approved by the Office of the Registrar, and approval should be sought prior to your enrollment at any other institution: registrar@cmc.edu.

Will international students in the U.S. be able to access treatment for COVID-19 under student health insurance?
Yes. International students will be able to use the SHIP coverage for COVID-19 treatment.

Will COVID-19 vaccines be provided for students who can’t get them in their home country?
If there are CMC students in locations (domestic or international) who have not been able to access a vaccine, we will work with those students one on one to help them get vaccinated in their location, or, if necessary, upon arrival to Claremont. If early arrivals are required to accommodate on-site vaccination, those will be discussed on a case by case basis. Students can contact deanofstudents@cmc.edu.

Can students receive COVID-19 vaccines that are not approved for use in the U.S.?
Students are encouraged to get whatever brand of vaccine is offered safely in their home location. Vaccines that are not approved for use in the U.S. will satisfy CMC’s vaccine mandate, but students receiving those vaccines may be subject to a free antibody serology test to assess immunity. Additionally, they may be required to participate in regular COVID-19 testing (self-administered nasal swab, PCR test, free of charge) in coordination with CMC’s Hamilton Health Box clinic.

Mental Health Support

Should we expect any changes at Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services (MCAPS)?
MCAPS will continue to offer the same amount and quality of counseling, assessment, crisis services and groups as they have in the past. At this time, MCAPS plans to have both, in person and virtual, therapy modalities.

To improve equity and timeliness of access to mental health services, MCAPS now offers a Rapid Access Initial Assessment. Every student at The Claremont Colleges requesting MCAPS services will be seen for a 20-25 minute appointment within a few days. During that appointment, students may be assessed as appropriate for brief, goal-directed therapy at MCAPS or referred out for long-term, more intensive, or more specialized treatment. MCAPS will no longer use a session-limit model where all students are entitled to 8 sessions specifically; rather, MCAPS will offer this Rapid Access Initial Assessment universally, with the goal of connecting each student as quickly as possible to appropriate mental health care. Brief therapy through MCAPS will be provided to those students who are appropriate candidates for short-term care.

Phone lines will re-open August 23rd for students to begin scheduling appointments for the fall semester.   For after-hours crisis services, which are available 24/7/365, the voicemail message will prompt you to press “1” to be connected to an on-call therapist.

How will psychiatry at MCAPS work?
Psychiatry appointments will continue to be offered, either in person or via telemedicine.

What 24/7 therapy options are there?
Students have access to two 24/7 on-demand supports. Both are free of charge.

7C Health: Students can access a licensed counselor through this web-based platform by clicking here: http://7c.health and signing up using their @cmc.edu email address. Students are able to take advantage of unlimited visits, though should be aware that these are not meant to be used in place of regularly scheduled, ongoing visits, meaning each time they log in, they may be connected with a different clinician.

If I’m currently seeing a therapist at home and want to find a new therapist in the Claremont area, what should I do?
Jess Neilson, Assistant Dean of Mental Health & and Case Management (jneilson@cmc.edu), serves as a connection point for those who would like to explore therapy or other emotional wellbeing options both on and off campus. For students who are looking to pursue mental health care options in the Claremont community, Jess can assist with relevant information and referrals.

Will CMC offer supplemental mental health counseling services and support resources as it has in the past?
Yes, CMC will continue to offer supplemental mental health support (either in person or via teletherapy) by contracting with a number of local therapists. A list of mental health resources can be found here.

Is there a process to follow if you are struggling with the transition back to campus/need help?
Yes, absolutely. Support services on campus will be available and they are ready to work with you! The Dean of Students office can provide support in a number of areas, including academic, mental health and emotional wellbeing, disability and accessibility services, social connectedness and more. The DOS staff can be reached via email or phone, and can help connect you to other campus resource offices as needed.

Residential Life and Student Activities

Move-In and COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements
Our residence halls, senior apartments, and the Alexan Kendry apartments will be ready for you. First-year students will live in doubles and triples. Returning students will live in doubles and singles as determined in room draw. This is CMC’s standard annual on-campus housing configuration, and it complies with current LA County guidance for a vaccinated residential population.

Unless approved for early arrival, students will move in per the schedule below:

  • First-years: Sunday, August 22 (8AM-11AM), depart campus for WOA on August 23
  • Sophomores: Tuesday, August 24 (8AM-11AM), depart campus for SWOA on August 25
  • Juniors and Seniors: Saturday or Sunday, August 28-29, as preferred, (8AM-3PM)

A maximum of 2 people are permitted to accompany you to campus to assist you to move-in.

Vaccination Mandate
Unless exempted through the Office of Civil Rights, all students are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You will not be permitted to move-in if you have not communicated your vaccination plans to the College. In addition, you will be removed from courses if you have not uploaded your vaccination information. Detailed information about move-in was emailed to new students in early August.

Current LA County Face Covering Guidance
In LA County, everyone 2 years of age and older must wear a mask in all indoor public settings, venues, gatherings, and public and private businesses, regardless of vaccination status.   

Regarding residence halls and apartments, masks are not required inside your individual residence hall room or apartment. Those areas are considered your “household”.

However, masks are required once you exit that private/semi-private space and enter into common areas in residential spaces including hallways, bathrooms, elevators, lounges. When you leave your room/apartment place a mask on when still indoors. If others enter your room, or you enter someone elses room, you must all put on a mask.

Will we be able to access the gym, the library, the reading room, etc.? 
Students will be able to access campus facilities including the library, Roberts Pavilion, Crocker Reading Room, the computer labs, and other common spaces while observing all safety protocols; however, students should anticipate revised hours, strict mask requirements, potential reservation processes, and other policies to support the health of our community as conditions require.

What about dining options?
A range of dining options will be offered, including:

  • Collins Dining Hall and the Hub
    Collins Dining Hall hours have been extended to 3 hours per mealtime. Snack at Collins will be offered per usual, and the Hub will be fully functional with late-night hours. The regular meal plan for all students will begin on August 28.

  • @Theo’s Food Truck
    To supplement regular meal service options, CMC is introducing a food truck this year. It will be located just north of Beckett Hall.
  • GrubHub
    CMC has partnered with GrubHub, which will allow students, faculty, and staff to order food ahead of time so they can swing by and grab their meals without delay. There are new locations across campus with outdoor seating for people who would like to hang out with friends and share meals outside as weather permits.

In addition to following our College guidelines, when dining inside at Collins, for example, do not utilize it as a social space to mingle or connect with multiple groups of people. Please respect the distancing between tables, and refrain from moving tables and chairs into large groupings. Take advantage of the outdoor dining areas we have designated for this purpose. Please try to minimize the time you spend in dense indoor locations unmasked, such as when dining. When classes begin, GrubHub will be deployed for all dining locations, which will allow you to order ahead. Those meals will be available for pick-up at the “to go” door on the north side of Collins, if you prefer to dine outside or in your room or office. @Theo’s, our new food truck, will be a fun outdoor dining option. Please adhere to our numerous safety procedures such as social distancing when possible, increasing hand sanitization, and wearing your facial coverings as required in all indoor spaces.

Will students be permitted to eat at the other 5C dining halls?
There will be no cross-campus dining in the fall. We are hopeful that cross-campus dining will resume in the spring semester.

Will students from the other Claremont Colleges be allowed to visit CMC’s campus? Can my family visit me?
As announced on September 3, visitors are allowed but all visitors age 16 and up must be vaccinated, with flexibility provided to Vice Presidents to determine if certain events do not require vaccination (such as outdoor campus tours by prospective students/families, spectators at outdoor sporting events). Certain visitors who will have more prolonged or significant contact with our community members must present prove of a negative PCR test before arrival. Visitors must participate in contact tracing, when necessary.

CMC students may ask permission to invite visitors to official club/organization events. All other rules about student guests as previously announced by the Dean of Students Office remain in effect. For the full Visitor Vaccination Policy.

Will RAs be responsible to enforce health guidelines and to notify the Dean of Students Office of any students who choose not to follow them?
To avoid COVID-19 outbreaks, we will lean on all students to respect any rules related to health guidelines. Resident Assistants are important student leaders who will help reinforce these expectations, but we expect all students to self-enforce and to hold one another accountable for the health and safety of the community.

How will the College support a diverse and inclusive campus community, including at the Alexan Kendry Apartments? 
Consistent with CMC’s mission and values, and in alignment with the President’s Initiative on Anti-Racism and the Black Experience in America, the Dean of Students Office and student leadership groups are committed to programs and policies that support all students, regardless of their housing arrangements. It is the responsibility of all members of our campus community to contribute to the vitality and overall inclusivity of our campus climate.

Will student activities be allowed to resume in-person? For example, clubs, organizations, CPB events, ASCMC events, etc.?
We look forward to campus life that will include a wide array of student activities within safety protocols; if there are regulations regarding occupancy or other health matters, these will be communicated to students and organization leaders. Rooms can be reserved per usual for student activities, including residence hall lounges. Any school-sponsored travel must be approved by the student activities office and adhere to CDC travel guidance.

  • As of this posting, we expect to enforce CMC’s regular policies regarding individual event registration, and we will review those expectations with students at the start of the year. Per usual, we will place a heavy emphasis on inclusive events, and will expect moderate and responsible behavior.
  • Per 5C agreement, there will be no 5C parties/large social events until after September 20, at which point conditions will be evaluated. This allows time for each campus to ensure that its students are fully vaccinated (some may not have been able to start their vaccination series until arriving in the U.S.). It also provides three weeks for each campus to build up its community and establish its institutional policies with students before opening events up to the broader 5C community.
  • ASCMC and CPB have both been working with the student activities office on CMC event planning, with an eye toward 5C event planning when approved.
  • 5C club and organization activity is ok to proceed immediately, so long as the activity is “business” related—5C club parties are not permitted before September 20, and must be registered and approved per usual.

Will there be a CMC Club and Research Institute Fair in the fall?
The CMC Club and Research Institute Fair will happen on Friday, September 3. More information is forthcoming from the ASCMC VP of Campus Organizations who is available to help all clubs create programs, run efficient and engaging meetings and elections, or even start a new club. What will Career Services programming look like in the fall?
Career Services support and programming will continue to be available in both in-person and virtual formats. For the fall, Students can look forward to employer interactions, virtual networking treks, our job shadow program, skills-building workshops, and alumni and parent networking panels. Additionally, we are continuing the new coaching program where a dedicated career coach will individually connect with every student. We recognize that our rising sophomores have missed out on a whole year of on campus activities, so we will be designing additional programming to help bring them fully up to speed on anything they have missed during their first year at CMC.

What will employee recruitment look like in the fall?
All employee recruiting activities such as interviews, networking events and information sessions will be offered in-person or remotely.   

What will on-campus jobs look like in the fall?
We anticipate that the number and variety of on-campus jobs for departments across the Claremont Consortium will return to normal levels for the fall semester. Career Services will collaborate with Financial Aid, Human Resources and key hiring departments to conduct a review of the CMC on-campus job recruitment process this summer in order to identify improvements for the fall. Campus Cultures and Values

Throughout the summer, the working group discussed the importance of building a strong community that emphasizes a culture of inclusion among all the class years and students. This is all the more important since the first-year and sophomore classes have never experienced our residential campus before. We will work with ASCMC to coordinate “getting to know each other” events beyond those at Orientation to help all of our students acclimate to campus life and build their social networks and sense of belonging.

Some key values the working group identified as important for the student experience include:
